School Profile

James Madison High School is located in the Clairemont Mesa area of San Diego, north of Interstate 8 and west of Interstate 805. The area comprising the Madison community includes small businesses (primarily of a service nature) and high-density housing—mainly apartment and condominium complexes and single-family tract houses.

Our 50-acre campus opened in 1962 and serves approximately 1,500 students in Grades 9–12. The staff includes a principal, two vice principals, one special education administrator, and more than 90 full- and part-time faculty members, as well as three counselors, a head counselor, a nurse, a psychologist, a librarian, and a life skills counselor. Other support staff includes 53 full-time classified personnel and a part-time speech therapist.

Madison’s instructional program is comprehensive, diversified, and focused on motivating students to do their best. From special education programs in Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH), Integrated Life Skills (ILS) and Resource Specialist, to Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) cluster and Seminar courses, a unified expectation is shared that Madison students will not only be college-bound, but they will be “college-ready.” Methods employed to institute improved student achievement include using data to inform instruction, implementing intensive literacy instruction and staff development through the Stiving Readers Grant Program, initiating California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) support programs in all grade levels, providing professional development on purposeful planning and student engagement, and utilizing community partnerships with such agencies as California Student Opportunity and Access Program (Cal-SOAP), Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID), and Mesa College to support the college-bound initiative. Four small learning communities—Design and Technology Academy, School of the Arts, Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC), and FROSH HOUSE—provide students with a sense of “family” within the learning environment, as well as allowing students to complete core subjects and electives within a thematic context.
